Neonatology and NICU
The Department of Neonatology and NICU at Manipal Hospital has a formidable reputation now in this southeast Asian part of the world for its excellence in care as well as in academic pursuits. The department has been involved in the growth of “ Neonatal Intensive Care” for more than two decades in India and has been active in initiating and been part of many new neonatal practices in the country. We have delivered high-quality Tertiary Neonatal Care these last 23 years of our existence. Whether it is the care of the Extremely Preterm Neonate or the sick baby with Multi-Organ Dysfunction, we are considered leaders in tertiary care.
Our strength lies in our ethical and professional quality of care and in maintaining the best of international standards, delivered by highly qualified & accomplished neonatologists and excellent neonatal nursing. We have been associated with the first pioneering therapies of initiating ventilation for sick neonates, first use of Surfactant therapy for Neonatal RDS in India, the first use of inhaled Nitric Oxide and High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation in Karnataka, first Neonatal Air Transports in the country, coordinating of first multicenter NICU trials in the country, etc. We have been actively involved at the national level on decision making, advocacy and policy matters for newborn health as advisory to the Government of India, UNICEF and professional organizations like the National Neonatology Forum of India & Indian Academy of Paediatrics. The Neonatal Unit at Manipal Hospital has been accredited as one of the most advanced NICUs in the country (Level III B) by the Prestigious National Neonatology Forum of India. We have been technical advisors on neonatal resuscitation to the WHO. Our robust academic program in neonatology has for many years attracted good Fellowship students from across the country and the Indian subcontinent. This includes the prestigious 3 years DNB (Neonatology) course. We are the major “ High-Risk Perinatal Centre” in this part of the country and take care of the most complex of preterm & other Neonatal patients in close association with the excellent Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics Department at the hospital. We are now poised for further advancement of our services with the networking of all the Neonatal ICUs in the Manipal Hospitals Group in India. This will ensure that the highest quality of care, for which we are well known, can be provided to a larger number of neonates.
